A ‘downhill’ chronicle…

From Bust-ass-Ville to Home-base 💆🏽‍♀️

Moments before this picture, I busted my ass trollop-ing DOWN the hill on the way to my car. I screamed, ‘ahhhhhhh’ and Bugg asked me if I was ok in a tone that read…dang ma, I would normally laugh but you fell REALLY hard; and so I’m worried as opposed to being amused. Because my fall was headed down the hill, I fell and then did a mini sliiiiiide into the valley. Let’s call this ‘first base’, shall we? Then I just laid there in the first-base-valley of Bust-ass-Ville. My boo, who was watching from across the parking lot, ran to my rescue with that same look of ‘worry as opposed to amused’ look in his eyes that Bugg had. And I thought, “I wish y’all would just laugh – that’d be less embarrassing”. They both insisted on helping me to my feet which embarrassed me more. I tried to resist their assistance at first. I probably could’ve chilled in first-base-valley for the remainder of the day; at least until the sun set. But nooooo, Mr. Massage Therapist and lil Miss Limber just had to grab either elbow and help the Grey-ish Tumble Weed onto her feet. It’s fine though. And I didn’t break na’er hip, wrist or ankle. So there! I got up. Second base. And made it to my car. Third base. With the help of those around me who find it necessary to help before they chuckle (‘cause let’s face it…me. + falling. + sliding. + ‘resting’ in the valley. = ha+ha 🤷🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️💆🏽‍♀️😆)! Home-base. Moral of the story – it’s sooooo easy to slip and fall when one is trollop-ing DOWNhill! Give credence to the side of the mountain that provides traction! That’s all folks.

🎶 Comin’ up! On the rough side… of the mountain! 🎶

An early ‘forever-entrance’ into the Kingdom of Wakanda!

Just a few thoughts as @litfortheculture1773 celebrates the honorable life and impeccable art of Chadwick Boseman:

• the #comic (a literary work with still animation, directly reminiscent of classic children’s lit. ) came FIRST! (First appearance: Stan Lee’s and Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four #52 – July 1966)
• his SISTER designed and manufactured his suit of armor.
• the King was protected by a legion of women who’d rather shave their heads than be distracted in battle…hand-to-hand, spiritual or otherwise.
• not☝🏾ONE person in Boseman’s camp shared or ‘leaked’ his personal info / medical diagnosis
• there were many times he presented as a King, functioned as a King…within a realm of physical pain, fear, discomfort and very real impending (im)mortality.
• accurate representation really does matter…as do #BlackLives!
• his was a MIGHTY #purpose…fulfilled!

Our ancestors come from Yoruba, therein lie the roots of our family tree. And so you will have a Yorubaland name – a name that means to breathe.

Series author’s poetic introduction to Embrace U’s second book: Simi Means Breathe

Simi Means Breathe: Simi is a mighty little soccer enthusiast with big talent – brave enough to both guard the goal and navigate his clinically diagnosed asthma. Come along as his coach and teammates share in his education both on and off the field. Second in the Embrace U series, we’ve upped our game with the inclusion of a lively, illustrated glossary and delicately leaned into the figurative importance of the journey towards breathing free in today’s social climate. The best teammates are the ones who show up and perform just in the nick of time… Welcome to the team, Simi!

Short-orders

During this quarantine my child is intent on making a short-order cook out of me. And ya know what? I’m going to oblige. I’m going to feed her with what her body naturally calls out for (within reason) and teeter between educating her and nourishing her. It’s all the same anyway. We’ve been granted the chance to be the stay-at-home moms are spirits have been running from for decades. The rest of the world can wait – we’ve got some ‘healthy-ing’ to do. Read that again. I could go on and on and maybe I will in a later post. But for now, I will leave you all with today’s lunch. And the recipe to go along with it. Be blessed. Feed your little ones! Feed your souls. Feed your future…with everything good.

Sour dough pepperoni pizza Grilled Cheese

Place 2 Slices of sour dough loaf bread into hot skillet already greased with butter or oil of choice. Lightly spread marinara sauce on the part of bread facing up. Place your choice of cheeses (we used mozzarella and sharp cheddar) on top of that. Work at a steady pace as to not burn your bread. Add your pepperoni slices. Mash down with a spatula so that everything sticks together, then carefully flip one side onto the other to form your sandwich. Keep flipping until you’ve reached your desired ‘toast’ level. Slice and enjoy!

Podcast ‘tings’: Timbs ‘n Teddies (Episode 4)

Episode 4: Toxic Femininity

In her award winning novel Beloved, Toni Morrison writes, “they were not holding hands but their shadows were.” As a people who have survived some of the worst transgressions known to mankind, our survival has been studied, dismantled and used as a means to lessen our value. Still, we survive. Still, we thrive. Healing, for the most part, does not feel good. But it is overall…good. In our discussion of toxic femininity, the overall message that was squeezed out is that Black feminine energy has done a hell of a job at healing itself – has done a divine job at rising from the ashes to be birthed anew. However, along the way she left a landscape that is now a bit barren, still scorching-hot in places, begging for water and electrolytes.

To be toxic and feminine is to be a world turned in on itself. It is poisoned wet, air void of oxygen, the ground turned quicksand. It is a space that only feminine energy can permeate in an effort to heal. In our spiritual journeys as feminines, we realize just how integral our health is to the collective. A beautiful black woman is a healthy black woman – inside and out! It is liberating to know that black masculine energy has come into their own space of healing and can no longer exist in a space of toxicity if we (as feminines) do not. Though some may be surprised that feminine energy is leading the way in the realm of overall healing in the black romantic sector, I think it’s fair to say that Sierra (lil sis) and I are not surprised in the least bit. Our DNA is one of healing.

Listen to my favorite track on Rapsody’s ‘Eve’ album as not an excuse for toxic behavior but as a view of toxic behavior nestled between cause and action (if you will). It’s a beautiful album attributed to beautiful beings birthed by a beautiful femme indeed! Circle of life!

Our shadows have held hands long enough. It is now time to let loose of what has become somewhat comfortable (in all it’s toxicity and malnourished form) in an effort to cradle something new, full and healthy. Whether you view toxic femininity as a mere function of toxic masculinity or as it’s own singular construct, I think we can all agree that women desire to embody receptivity… Feminine energy wants to receive, absorb, soak up what’s good, cradle & rock it ’til it resembles it’s parentage, then birth better. Herein lies her power. To be receptive is to have the freedom to want…and the wanting has returned (hallelujah!) – without fear of not receiving; without fear of half-empty having to be enough; without fear of the ego stepping in to protect her from her own dreams.

Is the above imagery an example of toxic femininity within the realm of black romanticism? It is an important condition to ponder, as we all agree on the traditional forms of bad female behavior (trapping, dangling, using, abusing, etc.) but we venture to say that there may be indeed a new, more jig-sawed & layered form of toxic femme behavior. No matter your view or answer, I think we all can pinpoint the many issues (or triggers) that are brought to the surface by this very simple depiction and even more lucid verbiage. Once healthy in our own right, do black feminines (considering both the historical and social context in which we’ve all been forced to mature in) now owe it to themselves and their potential partners to set a new bar? And is it healthy to do so?

Do yourself a favor and take a swig of this medicinal syrup (sirRIP – I stay somewhere w/ the wordplay 🎶 😉) while pondering the above image and question:

Cornbread Vernacular…

The sound of her rich voice put a few more jewels on my crown, added a couple of inches to each hip…took me on a trip back home to a place I’ve never been, yet my soul knows. She makes you remember the future. She makes you remember yourself. Our voices are powerful. Yet, our voices are only the tip of a great continent meeting the sea/see. And indeed, I see you…I see us (even in the dark). Come get fed off this here cornbread vernacular!
